Dr. Danny Joya, born June 22, 1954, and passed June 13, 2018, left behind a legacy of resilience, faith, and love. His name lives on through Wheels of Joya, a testament to his incredible journey and unbreakable spirit. The name Wheels of Joya was inspired by his wheelchair, which carried him through nearly three decades of unimaginable challenges. Though his body was confined, his heart and spirit were limitless.
Dr. Danny was more than just a doctor; he was a dreamer, a man driven by a passion for medicine. Leaving his home in the Philippines, he came to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. He succeeded, becoming a board-certified doctor, but just as he achieved that milestone, his life took an unexpected turn. Shortly after passing his medical board exams, Dr. Danny was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which left him completely paralyzed from the neck down.
What might have seemed like an insurmountable setback became the beginning of a new chapter. Despite the immense challenges he faced, Dr. Danny remained anchored in love, faith, and dedication. Supported by his wife, Mary, and their two children, he navigated 28 years of life in a wheelchair with unshakable strength. Though unable to practice medicine professionally, he continued to serve others by conducting research, publishing articles for medical professionals, and volunteering his time to help others, all without expecting anything in return.
Even in the darkest times, Dr. Danny’s spirit remained unbroken. In 2012, when he faced a life-threatening event on Thanksgiving Day and was fully reliant on a ventilator, he continued to fight. Against all odds, he defied the grim prognosis and thrived, a beacon of hope for everyone who knew him.
His life wasn’t just about enduring hardship; it was about giving hope, spreading love, and finding joy even in the most difficult moments. Dr. Danny’s example of resilience and unwavering faith inspired the creation of Wheels of Joya. On June 13, 2018, Dr. Danny left his wheelchair behind and ran to Jesus, but his legacy endures through the mission of Wheels of Joya, which continues to bring hope, joy, and love to those who need it most.
His wheels gave us the name Wheels of Joya, and his life continues to inspire us to live with faith, love, and resilience.
